Logo and colors
Our logo and school colors symbolize our core values:
- The shield and the blue in students' uniforms (not pictured) are a testament to the Jingwu association, which was one of the first public martial arts institutions in China that spread the teaching of gongfu to all (unlike the secrecy of traditional martial arts instruction that was limited to families or temples) with a diverse curriculum and inclusive environment. And, more obviously, a shield is a symbol of protection and of our commitment to protect and serve our community.
- The straight sword (jian) is considered a "scholar's" weapon because, unlike many other weapons, it requires a great deal of skill, technique, and learning to use effectively. Ultimately, one learns that the highest level of skill with such a weapon is never having to use it.
- The taiji (tai chi) symbol (popularly known as the "yin and yang") is the Daoist sign of balance, harmony, and unity.
- The seven stars, which refer to the constellation Ursa Major (the "Big Dipper"), have special importance in classical Chinese cosmology as a symbol of light.
- Red is the color of life and a reminder that the purpose of martial arts training is the preservation of life.
Business principles
We are committed to doing business and serving our community with fairness and justice. For this reason, we:
- Use local and domestic suppliers whenever possible. In some cases this practice increases the price of our merchandise by a couple dollars but we feel it is important to support local and domestic businesses (and also get a better quality product).
- Our credit card processor donates a percentage of the fees that we pay to charity. We have asked that our portion be donated to EOTO World, which works to provide resources for activists working to secure human rights around the world by alleviating poverty and promoting peace.
- Our website is hosted by iPage, which uses wind power to supply electricity for its operations (click on the "eco-friendly" badge at the bottom of the page for more information).
- We also use recycled paper for our printed materials whenever possible.
